How to configure a proxy server on Android?

Android allows you to configure the proxy settings for each Wi-Fi network. This is sometimes necessary to access the Internet on a business or school network, for example. The traffic in your browser will be sent via the proxy you configure.

IN RELATION :

The proxy you configure will be used by Chrome and other web browsers, but will not be able to be used by other applications. Each application developer may choose whether or not to use Android’s proxy. This is another good reason why you should use VPN instead of a proxy. With a VPN, you can force all of the application’s network traffic via the VPN connection. It is a better way to hide your IP address or to access geoblocked websites that are not available in your country.

This process is the same for all modern versions of Android, from Android 4.0 to 7.1. Some device manufacturers are changing the appearance and functions of the Android Settings screen. You can therefore find your Wi-Fi or proxy parameters in a slightly different location.

Open the Android Settings application and press “Wi-Fi” to display a list of Wi-Fi networks.

Press at length the name of the Wi-Fi network whose proxy parameters you want to modify. Press “Modify the network” when a menu appears.

If you are not yet connected to the Wi-Fi network, you must connect to the Wi-Fi network and enter its secret sentence before you can access the “Modify network” options.

Develop the “Advanced Options” section on this screen. Press the “Proxy” option and select “None” for any proxy, “Manual” to manually enter the proxy server settings or “Automatic proxy configuration” to automatically detect the appropriate parameters for your network.

The “Proxy Auto-Config” option may not be available on old versions of Android.

If you select “Proxy Auto-Config”, Android will ask you to enter the address of an automatic proxy configuration script, also called .PAC file. If your proxy organization or service provider needs a .PAC file, your network administrator or service provider will provide you with the address of the .PAC file that you must enter here.

Unlike other operating systems – Windows, macOS, iOS and even Google’s own Chrome OS – Android does not support the automatic web proxy or WPAD detection protocol. This is sometimes used on business or school networks to automatically distribute proxy parameters to network devices. If you activate “Proxy Auto-Config”, nothing will happen unless you also provide the address of a .PAC file where Android can acquire the proxy parameters.

On a network that uses WPAD, you will either need to point Android to the appropriate automatic proxy configuration script, or manually enter the proxy server settings.

If you select “Manual”, you can manually enter the details of the proxy server. Enter the proxy address in the “Proxy host name” box. Despite the name of the box, you can enter here both host names like “proxy.example.com” and IP addresses like “192.168.1.100″. Indicate the type of address you have. Enter the required port by the proxy in the “Port proxy” box.

If you want Android to bypass the proxy for all addresses, enter them in the “Contour the proxy for” box, separated by commas. For example, if you want Android to access howtogeek.com and example.com directly without using the proxy, you must enter the following text in the area:

howtogeek.com, example.com

Press “Save” to save your settings when you are finished.

Each Wi-FI network has its own proxy server settings. Even after activating a proxy server for a Wi-Fi network, other Wi-Fi networks will continue not to use a default proxy server. Repeat this process if you need to modify the proxy server settings for another Wi-Fi network.
